Carpet Care Tips

During winter, floors can really start to accumulate salt, dirt, and slush. For all types of flooring like carpet, laminate, and hardwood. There are specific ways you should be cleaning each of these materials and different products to try. When you have an accumulation of dirt, salt, and water, microbes will build up too. This can make your allergies flare up, and also germs will be present. It is always a good idea for a deep clean of areas that get dirty to help prevent smells, allergies, and germs. Here are some carpet care tips to make your experience much easier.

Carpet Care

By caring for your carpet, you can add longevity and keep your flooring looking clean and amazing. When cleaning your carpet some questions to ask yourself are:

  • What care instructions came with my carpet?
  • What products will I need?
  • Do I have pets and children to clean up after?

Preventative care can help you tackle keeping your carpets clean as well. This can involve taking your shoes off when you come inside, keeping your food and snacks in the kitchen to reduce crumbs and spills. Another great tip is investing in some rugs to help reduce wear and tear. Rugs are a great way to add some accents to your home and limit damage to your carpet in high-traffic areas. Make designated areas inside doors with shoe mats, rugs outside to wipe your shoes on if they have salt, dirt, and mud.

For cleaning, start by vacuuming up any debris. This task can be done twice a week or more as needed. Make sure to vacuum in a few different directions to get stubborn dirt and dust out of your carpet fibers.

Once you are done vacuuming, you can do some spot stain removal if needed too. It is handy to keep some cleaners or some handy tools to help you out. In a pinch for spills and stains, spot-clean the area to make sure your carpet does not get damaged. When you spot clean, start by checking any specific instructions that came with your carpet.  After that, it's time to either get a spot cleaning device or just a rag or brush and water and detergent. Spot cleaning is handy when you don’t need to do a deep clean but want to keep the life of your carpet long. For deep cleaning, steam your carpets. This is usually done around every 18 or so months, depending on how diary your carpets are and the recommendations.
