Learn about four textures for engineered hardwoods

One of the greatest things about the engineered hardwoods success story is the fact that the texture of the natural wood is mimicked. We encourage you to come into our showroom to see and feel these textures for yourself, but here is a quick overview of the variety we have.

Smooth:
Obviously, what is going on here is a very fine and smooth delicate covering on the engineered hardwoods. The ease and care of these smooth planks make this a common choice for builders. The natural grain of the wood is the showcase here. The planks are finely sanded to a smooth finish for a simple and subtle texture.

Wire-Brushed:
Wire-brushed wood looks scuffed. It has been wire-brushed with hard bristles removing the top layer of finish to reveal some texture on the hardwoods. It is not smooth at all and hides all kinds of imperfections. The wire-brushing intensity varies from lightly brushed to very hard scraped. You will need to decide what look, and which wire-brushing effect you like in your space. Families with pets love the wire-brushed look as you will never notice scuffs from dog nails in the wood. Wire-brushing can be very subtle and creates a clean chic look in your space.

Hand Scraped:
Craftsmen make the hand scraped hardwoods look distressed. There are varying degrees of hand scraping and the tools used vary as well. You could have an extreme hand scraped distressed look and craftsmen may have used chisels to gouge out part of the floors. They also use hand planes and metal gouges to make the bold markings of the hand scraped woods. This rustic charm will produce years of protection for active families with pets.

Distressed:
If you are concerned about high traffic areas, you can choose wood that is already distressed. Rocks, pebbles, and bolts are placed in a drum with the wood and continuously beat for a truly distinguished distressed look. As the years pass and your own scrapes and scuffs are included, it will only add to the worn effect of a distressed floor. Imperfections are cherished in this wood texture as it is the purpose of the effect to look worn and well loved.

You can imagine that each of these effects has natural texture associated with it. We recommend you visit a showroom to get the real feel of each of these hardwoods and then take samples home to truly visualize what will be in your space. These floors are perfect for high traffic areas and work well commercially too.
