What You Need to Know About Stacked Stone

Adding depth to vertical walls is a big trend in home design, and stacked stone is a beautiful way to do this. The three-dimensional veneer is made of pieces of natural stone that have been cut and glued to a backing. It is then put up like tiles. The material doesn't need grout, and the way it looks when it's just stacked is part of its draw.

Bryce Harding, the national sales manager for Delta Stone Products in Heber City, Utah, says, "There are trends in how stone is used, from the size of the grout joints to the colors." "Today, ledge-like materials are in style. It used to be rough and uneven, with a lot of different textures. Now, people also choose stacked stone with a smooth, modern finish and sharply cut edges.

Where to Use Stacked Stone

Stacked stone can be used both inside and outside and goes with any design style. It's the perfect material for a feature wall inside, around a fireplace, in a bathroom or hallway, or as a backsplash in a kitchen.

You can also use stacked stone to make the outside of a house or building stand out, around the front door, chimney, or on towers. It is often put on the bottom half of the front of a house, along with siding, and it can be used for things like landscaping.

Scott Lardner, who runs Rocky Mountain Stone in Albuquerque, New Mexico, says, "It's smooth and looks like a solid wall." "The coating is stuck straight to the base. If it's small, it can be used for any purpose, inside or out."

Choosing Stacked Stone

Since stacked stone is made of real stone, the colors will vary, which can affect how your project looks.

Harding says that natural stone should be picked early on because it is easy to change things like the color of stucco, wood, and paint. "First choose your stone, then make your palette and design around it."

Depending on the type of stone you choose, stacked stone can have a natural finish or a finished finish. If you want something to look smooth, you should use harder materials like quartzite or granite. When a natural finish is desired, softer stones are a good choice.

The cost of this job can change depending on how much you change the stone from its natural state.

Harding says, "Keep that in mind when you make your budget." "The less money it will be, the more it will look like it did when it came out of the mine. And the more it needs to be handled, cut, and finished, the more time and money will be spent."

"From a labor point of view, it's harder," says Lardner. "It's best used as a feature, for sure."

"When it comes to installation of stacked stone, we are experts," says Kris from Floors For Less.

Caring for Your Stacked Stone

Jacqueline Tabbah, vice president of International Stoneworks in Houston, Texas, says that stacked stone is easy to take care of once it is put in place because it is used on high surfaces. She says, "No one eats on it or walks on it." "It doesn't get used as much."

Tabbah says to dust often: "The ledges that stick out can hold as much dust as an average windowsill. A handheld vacuum or a duster that traps dust instead of spreading it around would be best."

In some places, you might need to use a neutral stone cleaner with a pH of 7 or 8. Tabbah says, "Just spray and wipe." "You don't have to do it every week; just when you need to, especially if the stacked stones are around the fireplace or in the kitchen."

Tabbah also says that stacked stone around a stove or in a kitchen or bathroom should be sealed. She says, "You don't want black soot or grease to get stuck in the porous surface." "Seal it once a year with a sealer that soaks into the wood. It does not change how the stone looks in any way. It gets into the pores of stone to keep oil and dirt from sticking and make it easy to clean."

Placed anywhere, stacked stone will make your area feel warm and beautiful. The look is the right mix of rustic and modern, turning a wall into a natural work of art you will love for years to come.
